#8 – Tips and Tricks for Successful Parenting: Bringing Understanding of Islam into Your Child’s School

As Salaamu Alaikum viewers.

Our children are a minority in own country. Being a minority means they are the unpopular ones, which of course has an effect on their self-esteem and confidence. They will be more likely to be picked on and bullied. There are ways for parents to make their child feel understood by others, especially in the school setting. Your child’s classmates probably have seen a lot of negative messages about Islam on the media. It will change the way other students look at your child. Your child will have an easier time at school when his/her classmates have a better understanding of his/her faith and culture.

How can you help your child feel welcomed and understood in his or her school?

By being creative!  

Parents can help their child feel better about themselves if the parent helps the administration and faculty of their child’s school understand what Islam is all about.

Tips and Tricks for Successful Parenting:

  • Parents can go to their child class and talk about Islamic Holidays, countries, and culture. The parent needs to understand that they should not preach Islam but build an understanding of Islam.
  • Give a 101 Islamic Studies class to the teachers and administration
  • Let administration and your child’s teacher know; prayer times and about wudu so they can provide accommodations; about fasting; if boys need to be picked up for Jummah prayer; Islamic diet and dress code.
  • Scanning textbooks for misinformation on Islam.

  • Help their teachers, staff, and classmates
  • Give gifts
  • Give greeting
  • Respect rules of the school
  • Respect all
  • Stand up for students who are bullied or tell a teacher

Different Activities to do in School:

  • Write good moral stories in the school newspaper
  • Put up relief booths to help disaster victims
  • Including Islamic holidays in the school calendar
  • Islamic books in school libraries
  • Hosting Islamic exhibitions
  • Islamic Awareness Day
  • Hijab day
  • Multicultural Day

Incorporating Islam into class projects:

  • If your child has to do a project in school/college, why not integrate Islam into it. It would be a great way to promote understanding.

Social Studies/ Science Class:

  • Muslim Explorers
  • Islamic Sciences
  • Islamic Scientist discovers

Math:

  • Algebra
  • Geometry

Language Art:

  • A poem by Muslims
  • Book report on Islamic figures
  • Reading books by Muslim Authors

 Art:

  • Architect
  • Tiles
